Water Supply Improvement Project (WSIP)

The Water Supply Improvement Project (WSIP) of the Ghana-Spain Debt Swap Development Programme (DSDP) is funded by the Spanish Government at a cost of US$3.78 million. The project is expected to deliver a total of eighteen (18) water systems (12 small town pipe systems and 6 limited mechanized systems) to serve 69,000 people in thirty-five (35) communities in the Ho Municipality, Ho West, Adaklu and Agotime/Ziope districts in the Volta Region.

Achievements

  1. Fourteen (14) water systems (10 small town pipe systems and 4 limited mechanized systems) constructed in Ziope and Akpokope/Batume Junction in the Agotime-Ziope District, Amedzofe, Dzolo Gbogame, Abutia Agorve and Dededo in the Ho West District, Shia and Matse in the Ho Municipality, Adaklu Tsrefe, Adaklu Sikama and Adaklu Kordiabe in the Adaklu District
  2. Six (6) water systems are under construction
UNICEF-Assisted WASH Projects

The projects are UNICEF funded and involve the rehabilitation of Hamile-Happa Water System in the Upper West Region, construction of cost-effective institutional latrines project in the Oti Region, and mechanization of two (2) high yielding boreholes in the North East Region.

Achievements

  1. 5km HDPE distribution pipe network laid in the Upper West Region
  2. Two (2) units of a 5-seater latrine constructed in the Oti Region
  3. Site preparation and pumping test completed for mechanization of two (2) high yielding boreholes in the North East Region.
Rural Water Utilitization Project (RWUP)

The Rural Water Utilitization Project (RWUP), financed through a grant of US$ 5.4 Million from Conrad Hilton Foundation involves the construction of pipe water systems at Mpohor and Wassa Dunkwa in the Western Region. It is expected to serve a total population of 15,000 people.

Achievements

  1. Feasibility and designs completed
  2. Source establishment completed and construction ongoing
  3. Drilling, pumping test and water quality testing conducted for five (5) source boreholes at Wassa Dunkwa
Ghana Red Cross WASH Project- WASH in Health Care Facilities and Schools

The project covers Kasena Nakana, Nabdam, Binduri and Pusiga Districts of the Upper East Region and involves;

  1. Construction of twenty (20) boreholes fitted with hand pumps
  2. Drilling and mechanization of twelve (12) boreholes in thirteen (13) Health Centres and three (3) in three (3) secondary schools
  3. Construction of eleven (11) water closet toilet facilities for six (6) Health Care Facilities,
  4. Construction of five (5) KVIP for three (3) schools and two (2) KVIP for two (2) Health Care Facilities
  5. Construction four (4) new incinerator and rehabilitation of one (1) existing incinerator for five (5) Health Care facilities.

Achievements

  1. Twenty-six (26) boreholes successfully drilled and nineteen (19) fitted with hand pumps
  2. Six (6) boreholes redeveloped
  3. Nine (9) water closet toilet facilities constructed
  4. Seven (7) limited mechanized water systems constructed
  5. Six (6) KVIPs constructed and handed over to the beneficiary health care centres and schools
  6. One (1) KVIP latrine constructed at AWE SHS
Reconstruction of Ejura Water System in the Ashanti Region

A GoG funded at a cost of GHS 13.4 Million. It involves the reconstruction of the broken down water system at Ejura in Ashanti Region. The project which started in July 2022, is expected to end in December 2023 and involves:

  1. Drilling of 3 boreholes and associated works
  2. Installation of 12 hybrid submersible pumps with solar farm,
  3. Construction and rehabilitation of 12 pump houses,
  4. Laying of 42km HDPE distribution pipelines
  5. Construction of 100m3 reinforced concrete high level tank
  6. Construction of Office Building with complete furnishing
  7. Installation of 2 high lift booster pumps
  8. Laying of transmission pipelines for new boreholes of about 7km (HDPE),
  9. Construction of 20 new and rehabilitation of 20 existing public standpipes installed with smart prepaid dispensers
  10. Rehabilitation of existing 500m3 and 70m3 ground level tanks.

Achievements

  1. Distribution and transmission pipes laid
  2. Water system management office constructed and furnished
  3. High level tanks constructed and existing ones rehabilitated
  4. Eight (8) boreholes mechanized with solar farm
  5. Nine (9) pump houses rehabilitated

Reconstruction of Goaso Water System in the Ahafo Region

A 2-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 26,465,880.94. It involve the reconstruction of the existing pipe water system

  1. Technical assessment and re-design completed
Reconstruction of Sefwi Wiawso Water System in the Western North Region

A 2-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 6,406,200.55. It involves the reconstruction of the Sefwi Wiawso pipe water system

Achievements

  1. Technical assessment and redesign of the system completed
  2. Boreholes drilled
  3. Pipe laying and pumphouse construction are on-going.
Reconstruction of Asankragwa Water System in the Western Region

A 2-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 24,755,113.33. It involves:

  1. Drilling and construction of boreholes
  2. Installation of hybrid submersible pumps with solar farm
  3. Laying of HDPE transmission pipelines
  4. Construction of high level tank
  5. Installation of packaged water treatment plant.

Achievements

  1. Boreholes drilled
  2. Construction of pumphouses and laying of 77km HDPE distribution pipelines on-going.
Reconstruction of Tumu Water System in the Upper West Region

A 1.5-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 18,078,103.03. It involves:

  1. Installation of two (2) submersible hybrid pumps
  2. Laying of HDPE Distribution pipes
  3. Construction of Water System Management Office
  4. Laying of distribution pipelines
  5. Installation of packaged water treatment plant
  6. Construction of two (2) high level tanks
Rehabilitation and Expansion of Bole Water System in the Savannah Region

A 1-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 2,029,557.90. It involves:

  1. Installation of two (2) submersible hybrid pumps
  2. Laying of HDPE Distribution pipes

A 1-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 13,833,449.03. The project involves:

Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project-Additional Financing (SRWSP-AF)

The project was financed through an IDA/World Bank US$ 45.7 Million loan facility (2017-2020). It covered eleven (11) regions; Central, Western, Western North, Bono East, Bono, Ahafo, Upper West, Upper East, Northern, North East and Savana regions.

Achievements

  1. Twenty-eight (28) Small Towns Pipe Water Systems constructed
  2. 243 boreholes drilled and fitted with handpumps
  3. GWCL pipeline extended to over 100 communities
  4. Design for 17 pipe systems completed in high fluoride communities in Upper East and Upper West regions
Five Districts Water Supply Scheme (STRABAG) Phase 1, 2 & 3

The Five Districts Water Supply Project was expected to supply safe water to a total population of 234,411 in two hundred and sixty (260) communities in five (5) districts, namely Central Tongu, North Tongu, Ho West, Adaklu and Agortime Ziope in the Volta Region. The concept was to phase out the project activities into four (4). Phases 1 and 2 were completed with a loan facility of €16.8 million from the Raiffeisenbank International Bank AG of Vienna, Austria.

Achievements under phases 1 and 2 include:

  1. 5000m3/d water treatment plant installed
  2. 37km transmission lines laid
  3. Nine (9) water towers/storage tanks and pump houses constructed
  4. Forty-six (46) standpipes constructed
  5. An office building and staff accommodation constructed

An additional loan facility of €11.5million was secured for the implementation of phase 3 to supply safe water to about 89,107 people in 183 communities in 4 districts, i.e. Central Tongu, North Tongu, Adaklu and Agotime Ziope. The project comprised;

  1. Design and construction of about 160km transmission and distribution pipe networks
  2. Construction of three (3) storage tanks and one (1) booster pumping station

Achievements

  1. 315,055m (315.55km) of pipe networks laid
  2. One (1) borehole, three (3) high level tanks, one (1) concrete platform and one hundred and thirteen (113) standpipes constructed
Conrad Hilton Foundation Emergency Support Project

The project was funded by Conrad Hilton Foundation at a cost of US$200,000 and comprised:

  1. Construction of ten (10) limited mechanized systems in ten (10) selected basic schools in Ashanti, Eastern and Western North regions
  2. Distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to 5,019 pupils in the beneficiary schools (Biemenso Basic, Manso Asuadai Primary and Fawotrikye Deduako Primary in Ashanti Region; Asikado DA Basic, Suhum R/C A, B & C cluster of schools and Asuboiman Methodist Basic in Eastern Region; and Nana Kwadwo Aduhene Memorial School, Sefwi Wiawso Roman Catholic Junior High, Anglican Primary A and Edumafua D/A Primary in Western North Region)

Achievements

  1. Ten (10) boreholes drilled and mechanized in selected beneficiary schools
  2. Polytank stands and standpipes constructed
  3. Solar panels installed on drilled boreholes
  4. Eight thousand five hundred (8,500) pieces of reusable and two hundred (200) packs of disposable face masks, five hundred (500) pieces of 1-litre rubbing alcohol, thirty (30) veronica buckets and metal stands, eleven (11) boxes of soap and thirty (30) packs of tissues distributed
Ghana National Gas Company Water Supply Project
  1. The project was funded by Ghana National Gas Company at GHS1,986,000. It was expected to deliver safe drinking water to about eighteen thousand (18,000) people in Central (Assin Amoakrom in Assin North District, Obohen/Odumase in Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, Abowinum-Badukrom in Ajumako Enyan Esiam District, Agona Otsenkorang in Agona West District) and Eastern regions (Addo Nkwanta in Abuakwa South District, Obawale in Yilo Krobo District and Pupuni in Asuogyaman District).It involved construction of ten (10) limited mechanized systems (LMS).Achievements
    1. Six (6) LMS constructed and three (3) ongoing,
    2. Distribution pipelines extended to Abowinum-Badukrom communities
    3. Three (3) public standpipes and 6m reinforced concrete tower for polytanks constructed
National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Water Supply Project

The project was financed by  NPA at an wamount of GHS500,000.00 and aimed to improve water supply in small communities in Eastern, Savannah and Northern regions. It involved:

  1. Construction of five (5) limited mechanised systems in Tinkong, Mantekrom, Pone and Aseseeso in Eastern Region
  2. Drilling and construction of two (2) boreholes in Kanato and Grupe in Savannah Region
  3. Fabrication of three (3) 4m high galvanised post towers for water tanks
  4. Installation of three (3) 10m3 PE tanks for Pishegu Pipe Water System in Northern Region.

Achievements

  1. Two (2) boreholes drilled and constructed at Kanato and Grupe
  2. Pishegu Pipe Water System constructed
  3. Five (5) limited mechanised systems constructed
Reconstruction of Mim Water System in the Ahafo Region

This is a GoG funded project a cost of GHS 10,517,853.00 and spanned from September, 2020 to September 2022. It involved reconstruction of the Mim broken down water system.

Achievements

  1. Two (2) boreholes constructed and associated works completed
  2. Three (3) hybrid submersible pumps and two (2) packaged water treatment plants installed
  3. Five (5) pump houses rehabilitated
  4. One (1) pump house reconstructed and existing boreholes redeveloped
  5. 750m HDPE transmission and 25km HDPE distribution networks laid
  6. 30 standpipes constructed and installed with smart meter water dispensers
  7. Water system management office constructed
Reconstruction of Yeji Water System in the Bono East Region

A GoG project implemented at a cost of GHS 9.6 Million and spanned from September 2021 to December 2022. It involved reconstruction of the broken down water system at Yeji.

Achievements

  1. Two (2) 120m3/h hybrid low lift (intake) pumps and three (3) 60m3/h hybrid high lift pumps installed
  2. Solar farms constructed
  3. Testing and repair of transmission pipelines completed
  4. Two (2) 60m3/h packaged water treatment plants installed
  5. Three (3) 120m3 high level reinforced concrete tanks repaired
  6. Additional 5km of distribution pipelines laid
  7. Sixty (60) standpipes constructed and smart meters installed on fifteen (15) standpipes
  8. Water System Management Office constructed
Rehabilitation and Expansion of Wulensi Water System in the Northern Region

A 1-year project funded by GoG at a cost of GHS 1,593,494.91. It involved the reconstruction of the Wulensi pipe water system.

Rehabilitation Works on the 3-District Water System in Greater Accra Region

A GoG funded project at a total of GHS 34 Million. It was expected to improve water services delivery in 168 beneficiary communities and new industries.

  2. 100m3/h packaged water treatment plant installed
  3. Transmission pipelines laid and solar farms constructed
  4. Old pumps (grid) replaced with hybrid pumps at intake, transmission and booster stations
